Oooh, the longest day of the year*! All downhill from now on.
Time for each of the Rover 216s. Exciting times. The knowledgeable will recognise the first two as Hondas.
* Unless you’re Australian or something when it’s the shortest day. Or unless you live on the equator where they’re all the same.

Yep, that’s been a point of discussion for fans of the show. Fake numbers, and they changed for unknown reasons a few seasons in.

It really fit the upper class status seeking on a middle class budget aspect of her character.

Yep, mildly pretentious badge on an ordinary car. The car was well-cast indeed.
Onslow’s old Cortina suits him too, a bit worse for wear, but dependable.

Rover had a serious resurgence in fortunes in the late ‘80s-mid ‘90s. Then BMW kind of ruined everything. Well, really the HHR 400 and bubble 200 started the slide. Overpriced and unexceptional compared to what came before, and ultimately in production way too long.

The 216 looks like it needs a Rover V8

That Cortina was also probably quite a bit more exclusive that Hyacinth’s Rover. Had to be a rare car on the road even at the time the series was filmed.

I am sure it is now - British inspections and high depreciation combined with winter conditions that encourage rust make anything that old fairly uncommon - especially compared to the US west coast where old cars are a daily sight . I know there’s a site that tracks the amount of certain cars still actively registered in blighty, should look it up.
Neighbor Elizabeth’s basic white Metro and sister Violet’s Mercedes also fit in.
